In search of the lost sounds of the monasteries of the Holy Land
52-minute documentary film written by Yves Touati
directed by Emmanuel Chouraqui

Following a musical and spiritual journey through the centuries, this documentary invites us to discover the wealth of Christian liturgies of Israel’s monasteries.
The journey begins at the dawn of the 4th century with the first Christian communities (Syriac, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, etc) and ends with the new charismatic or traditional communities more recently established in the present day Holy Land.

What is a producer ? Behind Epinal's image of an all-powerful man who frequents the stars and juggles with millions ... who are these men and women who make films possible ?
In theory, this profession consists of uniting the intellectual elements, artists, financiers and administrators necessary for producing a film or television program, whatever be the genre.   But in reality, what are the encounters, coincidences, talents and moments of stress that will give birth to a work ?  For viewers this series uncovers the world behind the scenes of creation.

Nobody has really given a credible chance to speak to the workmen of the great cinema family.  Workmen, or rather artisans who, little by little, film after film, have accompanied the progress of cinema from the silent films to the superproductions of the third millennium.

The Screw, "boreg" in Hebrew, is linked to madness.  "He's got a screw loose" or "He's lost a screw" are slang expressions signifying madness or eccentricity.  
But the screw is also related to the human condition, especially modern, and to alienation.  The Hebrew expressions "a screw in the system" or "a little screw in the machine"  signify an individual who has no authority nor power, a simple pawn  on the chessboard.  These multiple-meanings specific to Hebrew bring us back to the subject of our film. 
It concerns indeed this "alienation", in the sociological sense, that makes an outcast of a basically normal man, a madman who, once institutionalized, decides to undertake a journey to seek the screw that was lost.
In September 1995 RAFFAEL LOMAS is committed to a psychiatric hospital after a suicide attempt.  During his nine months of hospitalization, he fights for his right to madness by creating a sculpture:  a screw more than three meters tall.
When he leaves the psychiatric hospital, he lodges in an abandoned chicken coop in the mountains of Judea and where he will build, during a year and a half, the Museum of the Screw.   Then, with the screw on board,  he sets sails on a ship for a long voyage...
What is art ? Who is mad ? Who is not ?  Who can judge ?

During the war, the Serbs arrived at the village of Krusha Vorgel.  They ordered the Albanian women to take their children and leave the village.  At the same time, they locked up the village's 180 Albanian men in a two-room house and then fired on them before setting the house on fire.  
Three months later, the women and children came back to the village where, despite everything, they had to survive.  How did these village women succeed after the massacre of their men in this rural, Muslim, and traditionalist community ? 

It's in Senegal, facing the horizon where blue sky and blue sea are touched eternally, that Diogal Sakho acquired its opening towards the world, in a research of harmony, of justice and peace. It asserts them by simple and direct words in its mother tongue, the Wolof, by singing with an hot, soft and clear voice at the same time, its bewitching ballades.
The film was selected for the festival "Les états généraux du documentaire", and for festival "Vues d'Afrique" in Canada.
