THE CRAFTS IN THE SHADOW
Series of portraits of technicians and craftsmen of cinema
ten episodes of 26 minutes

PRESENTATION

Cinema technicians: behind this almost pejorative label are hidden a multitude of crafts that we propose to explain in this series... .
Nobody has really given a credible chance to speak to the workmen of the great cinema family.  Workmen, or rather artisans, who, little by little, film after film, have accompanied the progress of cinema from the silent films to the superproductions of the third millennium.

Production Manager, Location Manager, Assistant Director,  Film Composer, Script, Director of Photography, Sound Engineer, Gaffer, Key Grip, Film Editor, Sound Editor, Sound Mixer, Production Designer, Costume Designer, Key Makeup, Hair Stylist, Casting Director, etc... And without each of these, the making of  the film is impossible.

So then who are these technicians ? …Artists who are silent but indispensable to the industry of dreams.
We will ask them to help us discover their work ...how they themselves came into, created, and evolved their work.  What was their training ? How do they challenge themselves for each film? What links these technicians to the great cinema family.   How are they handling the intrusion of computerization into the creative process, and how are they adapting ?
How is it possible to work one day with Bergman and the next with Luc Besson ?  To shift with professional flexibility from psychological drama to action film ?

How are these cinema technicians recruited ? How do they live when away from shooting.  Do they have a philosophy, rules, rituals, loyalty to their peers ?
What are their relationships with the stars ?

Thanks to this series of 26-minute films, these men and women can at last tell their stories.
